Tips: Having fun with Funny Bits

Funny Bits was written for folks who want a brief time-out from some other program.
You can double-click one of the Funny Bits icons for a quick joke or burst of laughter. If you want Funny Bits to run on automatic, set up an AutoJoker and run it in the background. Use the main window for an easy way to sample jokes and laughs.
The laugh-only icons (dog and octopus) just laugh.
For many, this is the best part of Funny Bits. Double-click the octopus if the time is right for sarcastic or demented laughter. If you just told a joke and want to feel appreciated, double-click the dog instead.
Program any icon for the jokes and/or laughs you like.
Click the JokePicker button on the main window (the button looks like a caterpillar.) The JokePicker dialog box appears.
First, pick the icon you want to program.
Then, pick the jokes, voices, and laughs you prefer using checkboxes.
Then, set the radio button to put that icon on your desktop (if that's what you want.)
Finally, click the OK button to record your preferences for that icon. If you are creating an icon, the usual Mac dialog box will appear to ask what you want to name it and where it should go.
An easy way to put a programmable icon on your desktop?
Drag the one(s) you like out of the "Clickable Icons" folder inside your main Funny Bits folder and onto your desktop.
Set up an AutoJoker for yourself.
Click the AutoJoker button on the main window (the clock with a bell for a hat.) The AutoJoker dialog box appears.
First, pick the AutoJoker you want to program (Sanity Saver or Countdown Joker).
Then, pick the jokes, voices, and laughs you prefer using checkboxes.
Then, set the radio button to start that AutoJoker (if that's what you want.)
Finally, click the OK button to record your preferences.
What's the difference between the Sanity Saver and the Countdown Joker?
The Sanity Saver works like a screensaver--its time delay is measured from your last mouse or keyboard action. If you want a joke or laughter to save you from brain-freeze, the Sanity Saver is what you need. The Countdown Joker works like a normal timer. If you set the delay for ten minutes, it "goes off" ten minutes after you click the OK button, and every ten minutes thereafter.
How do I turn off an AutoJoker?
The AutoJokers stop working as soon as you quit Funny Bits. (So if you want to use them while you're using other programs, just leave Funny Bits running in the background--you can close its main window, but don't quit.) You can also turn off either AutoJoker by clicking the main window's AutoJoker button and setting that AutoJoker's radio button to "Off."
Why don't you use more of the Mac's funny voices?
The Robotto icon is programmed to use funny voices, but the main window's Joke button and the rest of the icons stick to just three voices: Agnes, Bruce, and Victoria. These three high quality voices are easier to understand.
How do I figure out which kinds of voices/jokes/laughs I want for my icons?
Play with the settings in the JokePicker dialog box and see which ones you enjoy. For easy testing, you can use the Tools menu or keyboard equivalents to play jokes and/or laughter with each setting
.Why should I buy Funny Bits when the demo is free?
The demo has only a small number of jokes--forty-something at this writing. The real thing has 762 jokes. If you like the demo, you will get sick of hearing the same 40 jokes again and again after a while, and it would be a good investment in your sanity to go back to www.funnybits.com, click the Buy It button, and download the real thing. Only $16.99.

Weird facts about Funny Bits

Can I stop Funny Bits in mid-sentence?

Use the normal Mac key combination, Command-Period. You can see this on the Tools menu as the command "Silence Now." You can also shut Funny Bits up by closing its window, or (of course) by quitting.
What happens if I click the Joke or Laugh button when Funny Bits is already telling a joke or laughing?
Nothing happens. If you want to interrupt a joke or laugh, you have to use the Silence Now command (or its equivalent key combo Command-Period.)
