See it: the AutoJoker

This little chip, with clock-hands on its nose and a brass bell for a hat, is your AutoJoker! You don't need to stick with a-joke-for-each-click-and-a-click-for-each joke—use the AutoJoker to make your computer act funny whenever you want.

Isn't it time to laugh?

If you don't want your computer to tell jokes or laugh except on cue, don't mess with the AutoJoker. But why be a wimp? Let your computer express itself!

The AutoJoker dialog box lets gives you two ways to hear jokes on schedule—the Sanity Saver and the Countdown Joker. Each of these starts up your talking chips after an interval of time, but each one reacts to its timer a little bit differently.

What is a Sanity Saver? As you might guess from its name, the Sanity Saver works like a screen saver only better—because saving your sanity is more important than saving your computer screen, which screen savers don't do anyway. Sanity Saver icon

When might you need your sanity saved? Suppose your brain-cells start freezing up with tension—both eyes fasten onto the screen and your fingers won't move. Or, the opposite insanity, your deadline is near but you've floated away into mental outer space. The Sanity Saver can snap you out of it with a laugh and/or joke. You can pick a short or long idle time before Funny Bits starts Auto-Joking, from one minute to an hour.

Countdown Joker icon The Countdown Joker is your other AutoJoke option. It counts down the seconds to joke time, whether you're working or not. You set the joke-free interval, between a minute and an hour.

If you want to hear jokes on schedule, use the AutoJoker button to turn on your Sanity Saver, Countdown Joker, or both. What if you shut down the program leaving one of the AutoJokers turned on? When your program quits, both AutoJoke options get turned off. After all, if your computer started talking and laughing whenever you turned it on—you'd soon really need your sanity saved. You can also turn off any joke or laugh in the middle in the normal Macintosh way, using the Command-Period key combination.

You also get to pick the jokes, voices, and laughs that each AutoJoke option uses—just as you can for the other programmable icons.

Philosophical questions from our fans

Mr. Bertrand Quibbleman of Terre Haute, Indiana wants to know: What would happen if I set my Sanity Saver to "demented laughter with no joke" and my Countdown Joker to "riddles with no laughter," and they both went off at exactly the same time?

Well, Mr. Quibbleman, you would hear demented laughter with no joke, because when there's any conflict in Funny Bits the Countdown Joker lets the Sanity Saver win. And may we say how very timely it is that you have decided to use a Sanity Saver.
