Funny Bits From Your Talking Chips comes with not just one but 7 collections of jokes. We collected almost 800 hilarious jokes (we collected way more than that but threw out lots of bad ones.) Our talking chips can tell jokes from these categories—barbs, kids, knock knock, puns, quibbles, quips, and riddles. The Joke Chip picks a joke category at random—if you want to pick the kinds of jokes, voices, and laughs you like best, you use the JokePicker Chip or the AutoJoker.

Are you wondering how knock knock jokes sound in only one voice? Well, don't worry! Funny Bits From Your Talking Chips has picked 12 of the finest voices that Macintosh offers, and our two-voice jokes really get told by two voices. The Joke Chip sticks with just three of these, the best three— Agnes, Bruce, and Victoria. These are Apple's high-end MacinTalk Pro voices. For computer voices, they are pretty easy to understand. That's why we use them in most of our default settings.

The other 9 voices are cool, but you do have a tradeoff between funny voice and understanding what funny thing the voice said. For example, the "Cellos" voice tries to sing each joke, doggedly starting its little tune all over again each time it hits punctuation. "Bubbles" sounds like a mermaid/computer hybrid. "Princess" is a very, very young robot. And so on. You get to hear these voices with the default setting of the Robotto icon, or you can program any of the icons or AutoJoke options to use voices you like.

And just for good luck, we picked 7 kinds of laughs to go with all those jokes—demented, giggle, goofy, group, happy, kids, outburst, and sarcastic. We didn't want the Joke Chip to get discouraged, so we programmed the Laugh Chip to laugh at any joke it came up with. These laughs are sound files, recorded from real people laughing—most of them genuine nerds and good friends of ours.
